At the mirror Post-NYSC
Record shows that, no fewer than four hundred thousand graduates participate in the NYSC scheme annually varying from both public and privately owned Universities in Nigeria and some approved recognized certificates outside the country. With the stream in batches of A, B and C, one can deduced that each batch pass out coherently on due dates base on the stream of entry. Batch A commences from March to May, batch B from July to September and batch C from November to December, each having a calendar year. Now to the question that lingers in out “what is the employability rate of the Nation?”
With record of no fewer than four hundred thousand graduates being released annually from NYSC to the labour market, what is their fate? Are they welcome into a honeyland combo of feast and cake or into a jeopardy of the already elaborated list of struggles for end means, or a mirage of the grass is greener on the other side’ as Adekunle Gold sang? what can this Halloween season offer be, let’s check it out.
The newly approved minimum wage by Mr. President is valued at 70,000 naira according to BBC news, while the estimated total pay for Graduate Trainee is about 137,000 naira per month with an average salary of 120,000 naira per month which is liable to change depending on the shift demands of cost of living in Nigeria. Graduate Trainee is being used as a yardstick because this stands as the mostly viewed option organization use to integrate graduates into the labour force. But haven mentioned this as the integration process, can it be said of all the 400 hundred thousand released being opportune for this?
On the 30th of September 2024, The Nigerian Economic Summit Group posted that, ‘the unemployment rate stood at 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2024, representing a third consecutive increase since second quarter of 2023’. With this fraction, who does this tally falls unto? The already workers on the newly approved 70,000 minimum wage or the sets of NYSC released batches every year.
A statistic that was released in Q3 2023 shows that ‘87.3 % of employed Nigerians were primarily self employed with the remaining 12.7% being primarily engaged as employees. With this record, one can say that certain percent of corp member either have a personal business at hand before NYSC or initiated the business busy idea learnt during SAED lecture at orientation camp or perhaps after rounding up NYSC. What can then be said of the government contribution with this considerable percentages of self employed Nigerians in the labour force, although an economy shouldn’t depend solely on the government for 100% contribution rather demand for a favorable government policy and environment for business and ideas to thrive but can one be said of Nigeria economy considering some major factors ravaging the country presently.
Furthermore, with unemployment rate at 5.3% in the first quarter of 2024 and an 87.3% self-employment rate in Nigeria, one can formally deduce a large amount of graduate didn’t get employed at their first attempt of application. Mostly the ‘don’t give up’ spirit and the ‘No gree for anybody’ slogan comes to full activation during the job-hunting phase for those who don’t think to quit. According to a new international survey by UNICEF and Gallup released ahead of the World Children’s Day marked annually on 20th November, Data from the survey reveals that young people in Nigeria are facing mental health challenge, with 1 in 6 young Nigerians. As much as 85 percent say they feel a greater pressure to succeed than their elders – the highest of all 21 countries surveyed, with young people in Lebanon a close second i.e., Nigeria children and youth feels under the most pressured to succeed globally.
Docking the ship, pointing out and referencing these checks and facts, it is most disturbing to see the troops of platoons of graduates being pushed out to a labour market of scares resources and commodity. I hope this prepares you to dot all your I’s and cross all T’s appropriately to be able to leverage on the scarce available offer. For the wishes make sure to be readily prepared. Welcome to labour market.
